JotCache allows very fast site response because entire page is stored in the cache and later when page is not expired then it is simply retrieved from cache. But when page contains some modules which dynamical change the content (who is online, running time clock, etc.) then these modules have to be excluded from caching for correct presentation.

JotCache is using for module exclusions from very early version specific marking (jot tags) of critical modules on positions of Joomla template. But this method of module exclusions is applicable only on templates with coding following standard template type (using jdoc tags). Many current web sites are using more complex template engines (Warp, etc.) for which was not possible to implement described method of exclusion with jot tags on index.php page.

Now is available new method for caching module exclusions which allows simply to set group of template position names in JotCache plugin settings and given module positions are then excluded from caching.

IMPORTANT CHANGE : Excluding only template position is not enough for proper presentation of cached modules located in that position but additional informations about style and attributes (when assigned) are required. Complete processing is now implemented in new JotCache 3.0.RC1 for Joomla 1.5 (see Help in part  Module positions excluded from page caching). From this reason is pre-release version of JotCache plugin 3.0.a for Joomla 2.5 unpublished as obsolete. JotCache 3.0.RC1 for Joomla 2.5 with the same features is now in preparation.

This method is coded in new pre-release version of JotCache plugin 3.0.a (Joomla 2.5). Installation file of this version have to be installed over existing 2.0.7 version of JotCache.

Installation and all following steps are the same as in case of JotCache current version only in plugin settings you find new text area named Modules Exclude. In Modules Exclude input are simply written names of positions from current used template separated by commas.

With extending number of live web sites running on Joomla 2.5 it was possible to collect related behavior reports and some obstacle descriptions from user community. Thanks to all who found the time and courage to write their reports via this site contact form about JotCache performance, settings and problems.

Special thanks to Ruud van Lent who pointed to uncompatibility of JotCache with new Social Login extension. He allowed problem analysis on his test site which shows remarkable influence. Running each mentioned extension alone was without any problem. But when both extensions were enabled no matter in which enabling sequence then site totally crashed. Coming back to development server with installed extensions was found Joomla core autoloader conflict. Autoloader was not able to recognize actual path of class (JController) with fatal consequencies.

New version of JotCache, ver.2.0.7 for Joomla 2.5 contains code changes to avoid Joomla core autoloader conflict. Also small maintenance code changes were included into this new version. Download of installation file you can find here. The description of JotCache operation and administration is presented in JotCache 2.0 Help.

Each of the last major versions of Joomla (1.6, 1.7 and 2.5) have some important differencies in core code which have influence on page caching operation. From this reason it was necessary to develop specific solutions which are working only limited on one major version. With coming new long-term supported Joomla 2.5 here are also new version of JotCache, ver.2.0.6. This version has now all functions implemented which are known from versions for Joomla 1.7 and 1.5 (JotCache version for J1.6 is not more developed). But of course some small obstacles related to PHP 5.3 (deprecated functions) were solved for coming JotCache 2.0.6 for J2.5. Download of installation file you can find here. The description of JotCache operation and administration is presented in JotCache 2.0 Help.

JotCache is advanced solution for page caching in Joomla framework. This solution replaces standard System-Cache plugin and it usually works along enabled Global Cache Settings. It consists from two major parts - JotCache plugin performing functions related to file caching and JotCache component allowing cache management. Additionally can be used JotCache Cron for periodical cache cleaning (garbage collection of expired cached items). For moderate loaded web sites is available in plugin as standard feature autoclean function.

Development of JotCache started more as one year ago with first version coming out in June 2010. At first thought as experimental proof-of-concept next versions of JotCache were used on different web sites some of them very large and heavy loaded with good results and administrators perceiving. Users feedback allowed to extend and steady further develop its functions. More as 15 thousands downloads were reached till now. It is time to enhance JotCache for better performance and management.

New JotCache ver.2.0 is fully redesigned page caching solution coming from base of previous versions with these major features :

  • Reworked cache management with faster opening on larger web sites – the cached files are presented with cached page titles and links, added more informations about cached page (browser type, language, non-routed query string), implemented items ordering, changed information about date/time of caching (incl. indication of expired or no more existing cache files)
  • Better exclusion of selected pages from page caching
  • Upgraded plugin functions for more powerfull autoclean (garbage collection) activity and browser caching.
  • New common installer for one-step installation of JotCache component and plugin in upgrade mode

I like to express thanks to all contributors, testers and users giving valuable feedback to achieve this new stage of cache solution. Download of installation file you can find here.
Inside installation file you can find short readme.txt and on this site is also published full text of JotCache 2.0 Help.
